| Aromatherapy
Essential oils are derived from plants, roots, flowers, seeds, nuts, berries and bark, the oils and are considered to be the plants life force. Essential oils have been used in the health care and perfumes for centuries. The earliest proof of this was in ancient Egypt where one town had large square spaces built in it to burn herbs to keep the air germ-free, this was about 2,750 BC.
Aromatherapy was used also in India, Greece, Rome and France about 5,000 years ago. It developed more in England during the time of the “Great Plague” when doctors of the time went round wearing hats with large beaks on them with aromatic herbs and spices in them to clean the air they breathed as they passed through the streets. Ordinary people had to use bags filled with the herbs and spices tied around their necks, as hats were quite expensive.
It was much later when Rene - Maurice Gattefosse, a scientist who started to research into the healing properties of essential oils after burning his hand and putting lavender oil onto the burn, he noticed how quickly the burn healed.
Gattefosse and others used essential oils during the 1914 -1918 war on the wounds of men in the trenches.
The use of the essential oils, under the name of aromatherapy came to Britain around about the late 1950’s, by Marguerite Maury. Marguerite Maury, was a beauty therapist and used the essential oils to massage her clients. Later she trained other therapists in the use of the oils for stress, skin conditions and also as perfumes.
Aromatherapy essential oils can be used to help most conditions, even if its only just to give a relaxing gentle massage and sooth the worries of the World away with the therapeutic actions of essential oils.
As with anything good or beneficial it will always be copied. There are now synthetic 'smelly' oils that give the impression of essential oils BUT do not have the therapeutic capabilities of pure essential oils.
Even essential oils can be for want of a better term 'watered down', so you need to ask about the purity of the essential oil that you are purchasing.
