Coconut Oil

The 'Energy Fat'

People in the 'know' use coconut oil, it is used by dieters, athletes and body builders.

It was research by Dr. Mary Enig who brought it back to the attention of people with true science studies instead of the hype put out by 'oil industries', that nearly destroyed the coconut oil industry.

As stated many times by us, look at the research and WHO funded it ?

Positive research in favour of the 'sponsor' means more funding.

Negative research not in favour of the 'sponsors' means no more funding !

It doesn't take Einstein to work out what is happening or happened.

While these claims about coconut oil have been widely disproved in many scientific studies and journals, unfortunately this perception of it being bad for you, that was instigated is still around.

The travesty of this action was that one of nature’s most amazing resources, coconut oil with all its nutritional possibilities, has been lost for decades.

Even though saturated, coconut oil is structurally, pharmaceutically and behaviourally different to any other natural oil or fat.

So determined was the pursuit of the American industries in converting their claims into health and wealth that even small island nations in the South Pacific were converted by this powerful marketing machine to change centuries of dietary traditions of tropical oils to actually importing polyunsaturated fats !!

Fats are bad for you, or are they ?

FACT - fats make hormones so how are they bad for you unless hydrogenated (heated) ?

Since we have followed this concept 'of fats are bad for you', just think about all the low fat diets and then about all the hormone replacement that is now needed by females ?

Do you think there may a correlation between the two ?

Why is it known as an energy fat ?

The short simple answer is that the liver converts it directly into energy.

It is also slightly lower than most fats and oils in calories, the main point being that it is utilised by your body.

PURE  virgin coconut oil is made from fresh coconuts.

It is NOT copra oil that is used for many coconut oils.

Oils made from copra have to be refined bleached and deodorised to make them fit for human consumption and they have no fragrance or flavour.

These may or may not be hydrogenated oils.

Most coconut oils on sale in the UK today are RBD (refined, bleached and deodorised).

The methods for collecting copra are unsanitary and the subsequent unrefined oil is not suitable for human consumption.

Copra oils have be refined (purified) because of this, it is usually done with solvent chemicals and the end result is a crude oil.

The oil is then bleached (to turn it from its brown, rancid colour to white) and finally it is deodorised to eliminate the bad taste and smell of the crude oil.

This oil is very often referred to as "natural" but this only means that it has not been hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated (heated).

Research has shown that these oils can increase serum cholesterol levels, this raising of cholesterol happens in trying to protect your heart, again read the research not all the hype !!

Pure virgin coconut oils have a pleasant distinct taste and fragrance.

Research has shown that not all saturated fats are alike and coconut oil is unique in its structural make-up due to its medium chain fatty acids - the closest to those found in human breast milk that nature provides.

They are the reason why coconut oil is used extensively in baby formula and also in sports drinks and energy bars, where it is usually described as MCT (medium chain tryglycerides).

This disguises the fact that some form of coconut oil has been used!

Medium chain fatty acids are more easily digested than fats found in other oils.

This is because they are processed directly in the liver and immediately converted into energy.

There is therefore less strain on the liver, pancreas and digestive system and, being easily digested, they also tend to improve the absorption of other nutrients.

Past research has failed to reveal this because it was carried out on hydrogenated coconut oil.

Many modern low fat, so called 'healthy' oils are hydrogenated.

Other so called 'healthy' polyunsaturated oils form toxic free radicals when heated.

Significantly, because virgin coconut oil is very stable, it is highly resistant to free radical generation when heated, even at high temperatures and is an especially safe oil to cook with.

TIPS FOR USING COCONUT OIL

1)    Open carefully for the first time as the oil will start to become liquid at temperatures in excess of 18oC (room temperature).

It will be completely liquid at temperatures above 24oC!

Ideally if you prefer your oil in a solid state keep it in a cool place.

In its natural environment Virgin Coconut Oil is always liquid.

It will not harm the product to remain liquid at all times.

It has an exceedingly long shelf life.

If the oil is solid and you want to make it liquid, heat the tub in a pan of warm water.

NEVER MICROWAVE as with any foods or beverages !

2)    As coconut oil is a stable cooking oil, one can simply replace other oils in the diet with coconut oil.

It is not that suitable for cold salad dressings because the liquid oil will become solid when mixed with cold ingredients.

3)    Since it is solid most of the time at room temperature or when refrigerated, it can be used as a butter or margarine substitute for spreads or for baking.

Most recipes calling for butter, margarine, or any other oil can be substituted with coconut oil.

4)    Many people simply eat it as it is by the spoonful.

5)    Mixing the oil with hot water and drinking it is becoming more popular or mixing it with herbal teas, honey, lemon, apple cider vinegar and other suitable beverages.

More ideas on how you could use virgin coconut oil:

-  Blend it in shakes and smoothies.
-  Stir it into porridge.
-  Prick potatoes and other vegetables and roast in coconut oil
-  Use it on rice or pasta.
-  Delicious when spread on crackers, Ryvita or bread.

-  Great for your pets, why not add it to their food for a nice shiny coat.
