What is Yin & Yang ?

Well it's a way of expressing what type of balance is present in whatever you may be talking about.

In this case, acupuncture, yin and yang were and are used for acupuncture, health, diet, the environment / nature and virtually anything that you can think about.

There are extremes of yin and yang, in other words a person or something can be for want of a better phrase be 'stuck' in that particular extreme so to speak.

We have all seen these extremes in everyday life.

Like the person who has depression or is very quite this could be likened to being a yin type of extreme.

Or the person who is the life and soul of the party and tends to be 'loud', with seemingly no end to their energy could be likened to a yang type of extreme.

Even though these people have extremes they will still have some form of the other within themselves that is trying to bring some balance back into their lives. even though it may at first be desirable to have seemingly endless energy, this person WILL burn out quick unless a form of yin energy starts to bring some balance back into their lives, we have all been there in one way or another, but something brings us back to an even balance no matter how the situation may seem at that time.

Lets look at a person who is what you would expect most people to be well balanced.

There isn't an extreme showing visually, a happy go lucky type of person who is sensitive to their surroundings and other people, easy to get on with, a really nice person overall.

But this person can, as all of us have extremes that change, that we see in a person, without even being a practitioner makes it obvious something is wrong ?

When nothing seems to be going right, no matter how hard we try, the 'in word' at the moment in society is termed stress !

We also know or recognise it in other terms, like emotions, a response to what has been said or done by someone or something within our lives.

If you see the same person looking a little distressed you would immediately start to think that something is wrong ?

Even though you don't know this person, but you would also have what is known as a form of empathy and your emotions would change as well, in trying to understand, why or what has happened ?

So even the life and soul of the party would have some yin brought back into their life, whether they like or not, this is what would happen, in trying to understand, what's going on ?

So how does this relate to acupuncture ?

Its what's known as Five Elements (there used to six elements).

These 'elements' are arranged in pairs of organs, that have systems attached to them, each and every one of the organs can and does have an effect on all the other organ / systems.

Some acupuncture systems use this to 'balance' a person, and bring their organ / system functions back into harmony with each other.

The term disease is seen as the body being ill at ease with itself and can be seen as being stated that the body is at dis-ease.

When dis-ease is present or starting these organs for want of a better term don't or start to not communicate with each other like they did when they were in harmony with nutrition, energy, etc.

Think about your situation at work or with friends, sometimes communication is present at other times it is not, again we have all been there.

When communication was not available what did you 'feel' when this happened - happy or not ?

When communication was re-established what did you 'feel' - happy or not ?

The body and its organs / systems respond to this, but are also governed by this subtly in other ways.

Maybe because we don't take nutrition or can't assimilate nutrition.

There are a myriad of conditions and situations that can bring dis-ease to the body.

From an acupuncture perspective the balance between organs / systems can be monitored by taking what are known as pulses, these are located where the radial pulse is and with training can be found as being separate, there are 6 pulses on each wrist relating to each organ / system of the five elements.

A lot of TCM schools nowadays do not utilise or teach this form of diagnoses now and teach / utilise only formulae acupuncture as its easier and more convenient to use.

Fortunately, modern acupuncture does use and teach this system.

It utilises the technique of measuring CMP's (central measurement points) as part of a basic initial protocol to determine what the balance is or is not within a person of the organs / systems.
